Melvin Herman Elkins, 89

Longtime Bisbee resident Melvin Herman Elkins went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 10, 2018. 

 

Born July 16, 1928, in Coleman, Texas. Melvin came to Bisbee after graduating High School in 1947. He began his career with Phelps Dodge Corp (PD) shortly after arriving and worked in the mines until underground operations ceased in 1975. He continued with PD at the Douglas Reduction Works (Smelter) until his retirement in 1982.  

 

Melvin also met the love of his life Patricia Esther McNally (Bisbee Native) shortly after his arrival and they married in November of 1947. They raised their family in Winwood Addition (near Lowell) and continued to live there until the small enclave of homes was purchased by PD in the 1990's. He resided on Barnett Road at the time of his passing.   

 

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Patricia in 2010, son James Martin (Martha) in 2016, sister Ora Faye Henderson (Bobby) of Oklahoma in 2014 and brother Merle Elkins (Norma Kay) of New Mexico in 2015.  

He is survived by his sons Gary Michael (Naomi) of New Mexico and Byron Alexander (Lynn) of Nevada, ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a sister Patricia Medley (Ron) of Texas.

   

Services are in care of Alex Espinosa Funeral Home of Bisbee and will take place on May 19, 2018, at 11:00 AM at the First Assembly of God, 40 Old Douglas Road, Bisbee, Arizona.  

 

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Bisbee Animal Shelter or your local Humane Society
